At Iberdrola México we have reasons to celebrate this World Environment Day because we know that even though there is still much work to do, we have taken significant steps towards combining our work in a responsible way; i. e., power generation with environmental recovery.
The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration*, which is an invitation to protect and recover ecosystems worldwide for the benefit of humanity and wildlife, began this year 2021. The purpose of this effort is bringing UN member countries together to prevent, stop and revert degradation across continents and oceans.
Before being aware of the initiative, we had already incorporated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in our day-to-day endeavor, directly contributing to the generation of affordable and clean energy, as well as actions for climate. Now we know that we are on the right track.
To understand the proposals of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, first we must know what we mean by ecosystems – these are organisms such as plants, animals, people and their environment. Although we think that they are more related to the wildlife, the truth is that they also include systems created by man, like cities or farmlands.
Today, in line with this new call of the United Nations, we know that what we have done in Altamira, Tamaulipas, with the recovery of the Garrapatas Estuary, has undoubtedly contributed to this goal. Thanks to this project, we are convinced that the generation of power in a responsible way can co-exist with the environment and contribute to its care.
Likewise, we are working on the conservation and preservation of the Fernandez Canyon, located in the state of Durango. In this ecosystem we focus on the restoration and improvement of Woods of millennial ahuehuete trees.
