ENERGY TRANSITION

The future is catching up with us: Decarbonization

At Iberdrola México, we are aware of the role we play in addressing climate change, which is why we are making improvements to our processes and seeking alternatives to make our operations environmentally friendly and contribute to decarbonization; in other words, the reduction of carbon emissions (CO2) into the environment as a result of essential activities for economies will be achieved through energy transition. This transition implies making gradual changes in the way energy sources are used.

Global temperature changes are mainly caused by human activity and gas emissions from the burning of fuels such as coal and oil[1]. However, the use of these fuels is necessary for essential activities that foster the development of economies. Therefore, the solution to climate change is more complex than just stopping the use of fossil fuels.

Our role in achieving decarbonization involves having innovative options that enable our customers to operate and cut carbon emissions into the environment. Our seven wind farms and three solar farms – with a total installed capacity of 1,163 MW – currently supply clean energy to a wide range of industries in different parts of the country.

In addition, we developed Smart Solar, a solution that enables our clients to generate energy within their facilities by placing solar panels in spaces not normally in use, such as rooftops or adjoining land.

At the same time, research and project studies have already begun in Mexico for the business sector interested in decarbonization through the use of green hydrogen, which has been consolidated internationally as the best option for energy transition, given that it is an abundant element in the earth and is obtained using renewable energies. It can be used as raw material for certain industries and as fuel for air, sea and land transportation.

According to the Energy Transition Index (ETI), as of 2021 it was countries such as Sweden, Norway and Denmark that had been taking the biggest steps forward in terms of energy transition over the last 10 years. According to this index, Mexico ranks 46th out of 115, thanks to the fact that many companies have chosen to incorporate the use of renewable energies into their processes.

There is still much to be done, but at Iberdrola México we are convinced that decarbonization is possible; it is just a matter of having the will to bring about changes that will have a global and long-term impact.
