COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Energy for the countryside: better crops in communities

At Iberdrola México we have a commitment to communities in which we are present. We work together with their inhabitants in projects addressed to boost their development and sustainability so that in the future they will walk on their own.

One example is Energía por el campo (Energy for the Countryside), which we have implemented in communities including Tamazunchale, Matlapa, Tampacán and San Martín Chalchicuautla, in San Luis Potosí, aimed at contributing to the improvement of productive activities.

Through this program, the Social Responsibility Area, Iberdrola People at the combined power plant in Tamazunchale and a specialized agronomist in the region work with communities in two activities:

  • Providing agronomy workshops and delivering inputs to local producers. The objective is to increase crop yield with knowledge about pruning, irrigation, control creation, and pest control. Also, inputs including orange plants, litchi, fertilizers and shadow mesh or chicken wire are delivered.

  • Planting orchards in community spaces. Every week, locality members receive training that ranges from preparing the space, planting and harvesting to maintaining orchards and the beginning of every sowing cycle for the new crop.

Energía por el Campo started in 2020. Beneficiaries have made the most of their land energy and raised extra revenues. So far, the project results are as follows:

  • An investment of more than one million
  • More than 650 people benefited
  • Four community orchards are in place
  • More than 7,600 orange, mango, and lychee plants, as well as more than 9 tons of organic fertilizer

Because the company’s social actions are a global commitment, they are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. In this case, we are working together with the communities to contribute to the following SDGs.
