Let’ transition to sustainability through energy

At Iberdrola México we believe that renewable energies are the gateway to the future because they have allowed us to live a more sustainable life. The use of inexhaustible resources, such as the sun and the wind, will enable different industries to reduce CO2 emissions, making it possible to fulfill in Mexico the Sustainable Development Goals established worldwide as a result of the concern about the effects of climate change.

In response to the need to direct Mexico towards conscious power generation with a lower impact on the environment, since our arrival in the country over 20 years ago, our vision has been to innovate and use its potential and its inexhaustible resources. At present, our renewable energy facilities add up to 10 farms – 7 wind farms  (693 MW) and 3 solar farms (470 MW) – strategically spread out in certain states including Puebla, Oaxaca, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, and Sonora, which supply energy to companies in various industries.

Transitioning to these technologies allows us as a society to prevent and mitigate the effects of climate change generally and, in particular, it implies development of those places where power is generated due to value chains created with customers, suppliers, and communities.

According to Adnan Z. Amin, director general of the International Renewable Energy Agency, consistent development and innovation of renewables will have a positive effect on reducing their costs.

Places with a suitable expenditure structure and resources will be privileged for clean energy generation. Mexico is fortunate to be in the so-called Sunbelt – a set of 60 countries receiving higher levels of solar radiation due to their geographical location between 40° North and 35° South parallels, between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. These characteristics make the production of environmentally friendly energies competitive with production from fossil fuels.

Iberdrola México’s social and environmental actions

In addition, we believe that as part of our commitment to Mexico it is very important to leave a mark in communities close to our farm facilities and look after the ecosystem in the region, by adding renewable energies to our support strategy to localities and their people:

  • Luces de Esperanza: (Lights of Hope) Communities with lack of access to electricity now have light in their homes, health and community centers through solar panels.
  • Construir para Educar: (Build to Educate) Earthquake affected schools were rebuilt and panels were incorporated in their infrastructure to power facilities with solar energy.
  • Impulso STEM: (STEM Boost) The scholarship program for students in Oaxaca to continue university studies included programs such as Engineering in Renewable Energies.

In this way, besides generating efficient energy at competitive prices for various industries in México, we add the use of renewable energies to our social support strategy.
