In 1959, the Tree Day was celebrated for the first time in Mexico, and since then, on every second Thursday in July we reflect on concrete actions to protect, conserve and restore forests and their trees.
Trees play a key role in the preservation of ecosystems and urban zones because they:
- Regulate the water cycle.
- Capture carbon.
- Are a protective barrier for biodiversity.
- Help in the dispersal of seeds.
- Regulate air quality.
- Dampen the effect of natural disasters.
- Regulate temperature.
- Help as barriers against the wind.
- Contribute to retain pollutants.
Just one tree can inhale an average 12 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2) in one year, exhaling enough oxygen for a four-member family. Consequently, one hectare of trees can absorb up to 6 tons of carbon dioxide a year.
In Mexico, the presence of trees is considerably important, with a vegetable coverage of over 138 million hectares, which account for 70% of the national territory and 64.8 million trees.
The presence of trees is key to ensure sustainable development of ecosystems. Being aware of this, Iberdrola México joined Pronatura, the Government of Durango, and the state’s Secretariat of Natural Resources and the Environment to develop a project aimed at conserving the Fernández Canyon, one of the most important natural reserves with a vast number of ahuehuetes or sabinos in the north of Mexico.
We will work in this area to restore and improve millenary sabino forests, through the diagnosis, reforestation, and maintenance of 600 hectares.
This species, which we are committed to conserving, was designated Mexico’s national tree in 1921, and because of its longevity, it has become a chronicler of time. It has also turned into a tourist attraction, like the Árbol del Tule, which because of its majesty has become a mandatory place to visit for national and foreign tourists alike.
We will continue to work from Iberdrola México on driving initiatives that will allow us to build a cleaner future for coming generations with our actions that benefit the environment.
