Oaxaca, April 1, de abril de 2020.- Today, Iberdrola México, the UNAM Institute of Renewable Energies (IER) and the Universidad Tecnológica de los Valles Centrales de Oaxaca (UTVCO) launched the first call for scholarships for engineering studies that are part of Impulso STEM (STEM Boost), a program aimed at boosting technical studies among young people in the southeast of Mexico.
Applications to participate in the selection process will be received from April 1 to May 29, 2020 at www.impulsostem.com. This year, 20 scholarships – 10 for male and 10 for female students – will be awarded to study engineering at the UTVCO.
“The development of the southeast of Mexico is a reality owing to the collective efforts of the government, the academy, and the private sector. For Iberdrola México, the growth in this region of the country is closely linked to the improvement in the education of young people to increase their future opportunities. Therefore, our commitment is to provide them a better university education through programs like Impulso STEM”, Enrique Alba, Iberdrola México CEO, said.
The UTVCO rector, Nydia Delhi Mata Sánchez, states that a joint effort involving education institutions, the government and the private sector will have a positive impact on the state’s youngsters, through scholarships that will enable to motivate particularly more women to study STEM courses and have a close accompaniment to successfully complete their academic education.
With an initial investment of 15 billion pesos, Impulso STEM will have a direct impact on at least one hundred public schools and over 12 thousand students in the Valles Centrales region and the Istmo de Oaxaca through various lines of action, including training teachers in science and technology, developing courses and workshops, and communication campaigns.
Furthermore, 100 scholarships will be awarded between 2020 and 2024 to Oaxaca students coming from public high schools to study engineering at the UTVCO.
About Impulso STEM scholarships
The scholarship program is designed for students interested in studying engineering to successfully complete their studies from the beginning to the end. Therefore, one of the requirements to participate in the call is for students to show their interest in educational programs at the UTVCO, such as Sustainable and Protected Agriculture, Information Technologies, Renewable Energies, or Mechatronics.
The professional education period of the first 20 scholarships will be from September 2020 to April 2024, and they will comprise the following items:
- Enrollment fee at the Universidad Tecnológica de los Valles Centrales de Oaxaca.
- Quarterly grant for transportation, support, and field trip expenses, according to the duration of each program of studies.

The Impulso STEM program seeks to have a positive impact on the young people in Oaxaca, through various lines of action that will enable to better meet labor market needs and increase the states’ productivity and competitivity in the future, including:
- Training of teachers and career guidance providers to optimize how they transmit knowledge on science and technology.
- Development of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses for elementary and middle-higher education institutions.
- A communication campaign that encourages young people, mainly women, to study engineering.
Besides the Impulso STEM, Iberdrola México will invest over 300 million pesos later this year to implement a wide range of social projects in Mexico, including Luces de Esperanza (Lights of Hope), a program to bring electricity through solar panels to rural communities, and Construir para Educar (Build to Educate), designed to rebuild 50 schools affected by the 2017 earthquakes in the state of Oaxaca.
