WIND DAY

Wind energy: energy and green job generator in Mexico

Wind is an indispensable resource for planet life and one of its virtues is the potential to generate energy and thus start a virtuous circle: generation of clean sustainable energy and creation of green jobs. This has turned out to be a motive to celebrate the World Wind Day at Iberdrola México.

As a group as well as in Mexico, we have been concerned with boosting the development of renewable energies, and wind has been our ally. In Mexico we currently operate seven wind farms located in strategic regions including Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guanajuato.

But … what are green jobs?

According to the UN Environmental Program (UNEP), green jobs are defined as:

“Work in agricultural, manufacturing, research and development, administrative and service activities that contribute substantially to preserving or restoring environmental quality”.

Wind projects have been developed due to the work and talent of hundreds of people and it is considered as a green job, since it aims at preserving the environment through the sustainable generation of energy.

At present, wind energy is booming and careers such as Renewable Energy Engineering are highly valued in the energy sector due to skilled labor demand.

In Mexico, the installation of our wind farms has created more than 2,000 jobs, from the construction phase to the operation and maintenance phase.
