UROLOGICAL BRIGADES 2022

Iberdrola México launches international urology specialty scholarships

  • In this edition, the company offers a scholarship to Mexican urologists so they can improve their techniques in a hospital in Spain, and another one to nursing staff in Oaxaca working in the public sector.
  • Scholarships are part of the Urological Brigade program that performs free surgery on low-income people.

Mexico City, June 14, 2022. ─ Iberdrola México, together with the Miguel Litton Foundation and the Spanish Urology Association, opened the second edition of the international scholarship for advanced urology specialty, addressed to urologists across the country who work in the public sector, as well as nursing staff in the state of Oaxaca.

“Launching these new scholarships fills us with pride because both training and healthcare are essential for the development of a community. These scholarships are part of a more ambitious program: Urological Brigades, which with the support of the Miguel Litton Foundation have performed more than 140 urological surgeries on low-income people in Oaxaca since 2019”, said Enrique Alba, CEO of Iberdrola México.

The first scholarship was handed out in 2021 to the Oaxacan physician Edgar Gaytán, who spent one month in four hospitals in Spain to expand his knowledge and improve his techniques.

“The scholarship allowed me to learn new methodologies and reinforce my knowledge in this field of medicine to subsequently support communities in Oaxaca. Nothing is more satisfying than putting the training acquired in Spain at people’s service”, said Gaytán, who worked in the brigades held last December when he returned to Mexico.

NEW CALL

In order to continue supporting local communities, Iberdrola México Foundation and its allies launched this new scholarship call, with a deadline to submit applications on July 22.

The scholarship for advanced urology specialty is addressed to Mexicans with at least two years of experience after having obtained the degree in urology, who work in the public sector. The successful applicant will receive training for one month at a hospital in Spain to perfect techniques of laparoscopic surgery, kidney transplant, robotic surgery for medical and surgical treatment in advanced urology, as well as functional pelvic floor surgery.

The scholarship addressed to nursing staff in Oaxaca comprises one month of learning in functional urology, to expand knowledge for the treatment of urinary tract and pelvic floor disorders and associated pathologies.

In both cases, the scholarship covers transportation, accommodation and food expenses for training in Spain, which will take place between October and November 2022 in a hospital accredited by the Spanish Urology Association.

After a period or interviews with scholarship applicants,  the names of successful applicants will be announced on August 25, on websites www.fundacioniberdrolamexico.org and www.fundacionmiguellitton.org.

FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE OAXACAN SOCIETY

The Urological Brigades program is aimed at contributing to the wellbeing of low-income people in Oaxaca, mainly women who suffer urological problems.

This project, of which the Secretariat of Health Services in Oaxaca and the High Specialty Regional Hospital of Oaxaca (HRAEO) are allies as well, started late in 2019, with an investment of more than six million pesos up to 2024.

In the first edition, held from November 23 to 28, 2019, eight surgeons specialized in urology performed 71 surgeries on 50 low-income people at the HRAEO, while in the second edition in 2021, eleven specialists performed 71 urological surgeries on 55 patients, out of which 34 were women.

With this program, Iberdrola México strengthens its commitment to support the regions where it operates, specifically in Oaxaca, where besides having an installed generation capacity of 300MW distributed among four wind farms, it implements social actions that help the social and economic development of the south and southeast of the country.
