Oaxaca, November 24, 2021.- Iberdrola México, in alliance with the University of the Central Valleys of Oaxaca (UTVCO), held the second edition of the Impulso STEM Forum, a space addressed to encourage the interest of high-school students in Oaxaca in programs related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics  (STEM).

“This second Impulso STEM Forum intends to bring young people closer to science and technology. It is important to be able to motivate them in different ways: workshops, discussions and experiences, so that they can be closer to all the projects in which we can generate local and national development,” said Nydia Mata, director at the UTVCO.

At the Forum with company’s experts in several areas as the main speakers, Iberdrola México announced that it will launch the third call of university scholarships for young people in Oaxaca to study an engineering program at the UTVCO in the first quarter of 2022.

The lecture program included topics like sustainability, monitoring of remote wind turbines, actions to mitigate the effects of climate change and the SCADA system, a software allowing to automatically control and supervise remote industrial processes.

“It is a great satisfaction to participate in this kind of spaces, because from my experience as a graduate from the UTVCO as well as in the work field, I can share with the young people the meaning of studying engineering and the great positive impact it may have”, said Alma Santos, operation assistant at the power substation of La Venta III, wind farm.

Students of the main educational subsystems in Oaxaca, including the Colegio de Bachilleres (COBAO), the Instituto de Estudios de Bachillerato (IEBO), the Colegio de Estudios Científicos y Tecnológicos (CECYTEO), the Centro de Bachillerato Tecnológico Industrial y de Servicios (CBTIS), Centros de Educación Tecnológica Agropecuaria (CBTAS) and Bachilleratos Indígenas Comunitarios (BIC) in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, participated in the event both in person and virtually.

This Forum is part of the Impulso STEM (STEM Boost) project which was launched by the company in 2019 together with the UTVCO and the UNAM’s Institute of Renewable Energies to promote STEM education among the youth in Oaxaca. The initiative includes training of teachers and guidance counselors, workshops, and courses for children, as well as the granting of university scholarships so that more women will study engineering at the UTVCO.

Iberdrola México is committed to the development of the south and southeast of the country, and thus encourages large numbers of educational and social projects for the benefit of the residents of the communities in which it operates.
