Iberdrola México launches the fourth invitation for Impulso STEM scholarships in Oaxaca

  • This year, a total of 23 scholarships will be granted to students in Oaxaca.
  • Impulso STEM has granted scholarships to 58 young people in the region so far.

Oaxaca, February 27, 2023.- As part of its ongoing drive to support educational development in Oaxaca, Iberdrola México launched its fourth invitation for the Impulso STEM scholarships for young people interested in studying engineering at the Technological University of the Central Valleys of Oaxaca (UTVCO).

In this new edition of the program, 23 scholarships will be granted to those interested in studying one of the following five degrees offered by the UTVCO: Sustainable and Protected Agriculture, Information Technologies, Renewable Energies, Mechatronics, and Textile Design and Fashion.

“In only four years we have succeeded in turning Impulso STEM (STEM Boost) into a benchmark for young people in Oaxaca, mainly women, to study degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We want to continue supporting talented students in Oaxaca so that they themselves can become the engine of change and development in the south-southeast of the country” said Enrique Alba, CEO of Iberdrola México.

Applications to participate in the selection process need to be received between February 27 and May 31. The final list of the winners of the Impulso STEM scholarship will be released on July 28.

“With this fourth generation of Impulso STEM (STEM Boost), the UTVCO and Iberdrola México reinforce their collaboration in order for more students to pursue a career in technology and science, with excellent training to join the work market,” said the rector of the UTVCO, Tania López López.

The professional training period for this generation runs from September 2023 to April 2027. The support provided covers the UTVCO’s registration fee and includes a four-monthly financial endowment to cover school fees, transportation, food, and lodging, in accordance with the duration of the study plan for each degree program.

Impulso STEM (STEM Boost) is a program developed by Iberdrola México Foundation in Alliance with the UTVCO, STEM For Kids, and the UNAM’s Renewable Energies Institute (IER), and seeks to have a positive impact on 12,000 students in the Central Valleys region and the Isthmus of Oaxaca.

Driving force for young people

According to an analysis made by the Mexican Competitiveness Institute (IMCO), in Mexico only 3 out of 10 professionals who chose degree programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are women.

Therefore, this program encourages women to study STEM careers and closes the gender and wage gap that still exists in Mexico. In addition, teachers and counselors are trained to encourage women to study some kind of engineering.

A total of 58 students – half of them women – have received an Impulso STEM scholarship, a program with a 15-million-peso budget up to 2024, which was recently recognized with the Ibero-American Best Practices Award on Sustainable Development Goals (ODSs).

With Impulso STEM (STEM Boost), Iberdrola México strengthens its commitment to support the regions where it operates, mainly in Oaxaca, where besides, four wind farms totaling an installed capacity of 300 megawatts (MW), it implements social actions that help the social and economic development in the south-southeast of the country.
