Besides Valentine’s Day, on February 14 we celebrate the World Energy Day. Has this decision been made because love gives us energy? There is no doubt, but we believe that the true reason for having a day to celebrate and reflect on energy is the comfort and safety given by the different forms in which energy presents itself and is used, becoming a need for daily life.
It is precisely the fact of recognizing day by day the importance of energy one of the purposes of celebrating energy every February 14. There is, however, another important point to share among people and it is the use of alternative power generating sources.
According to the United Nations, 80% of power generated worldwide is from fossil fuels, out of which 36% comes from oil and only 2% comes from renewable sources. Keeping clean energies in mind was considered a noble action for the planet, but in fact it is a factor of change that can help preserve our planet for many years.
This is very important for all of us who are part of Iberdrola in Mexico and around the world, because one of our values is to respect the environment and thus our actions are focused on taking care of our environment, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN in September 2015.
Our renewable energy business in Mexico uses two specific sources: wind, which utilizes the wind force to generate electricity, and photovoltaics, which utilizes the inexhaustible solar energy, leading to considerable savings in consumption and costs.
Also, at Iberdrola’s Generation we utilize other environmentally-friendly sources to produce electricity. For instance, at our combined cycle plants with natural gas turbine and vapor turbines, power generation accounts for 60% lower carbon dioxide emissions and requires a third of the water used at conventional thermoelectric plants.
With these actions we contribute to deliver on our commitment to the environment by reducing CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and become CO2 neutral by 2050.
Now that you are aware of this, we expect that as of this February 14 you will devote this day not only to celebrate your loved ones but to reflect on how we can preserve our planet for the future with the efficient use of different types of energy.
