Tamazunchale (San Luis Potosí), March 25, 2021.- Iberdrola México benefited more than 700 people during the implementation of the second phase of the Luces de Esperanza (Lights of Hope) program in the Huasteca Potosina – a project that started in 2019 designed to bring electrical power to rural communities lacking electricity in the region.

During this stage of the program, which required an investment of seven million pesos, autonomous solar systems and a battery were installed in a health center and 100 houses in 36 communities in the municipalities of Tamazunchale, San Martín Chalchicuautla, Matlapa and Tampacán.

“We are proud to contribute to the wellbeing and development of communities in the Huasteca Potosina through Luces de Esperanza – a program that improves people’s life and promotes quality medical care, combats educational lag and encourages productive activities”, said Manuel Argüelles, manager of the Tamazunchale combined-cycle power plant.

In Mexico, 268,863 homes still do not have access to electric power and this figure comes to 11,142 houses in San Luis Potosí, according to the INEGI (National Statistics and Geography Institute) 2020 Population and Housing Census.

The project also includes holding environmental workshops for communities, with the purpose of raising awareness among children and adults about the importance of taking care of the environment and using renewable energies to move forward towards a sustainable future, as well as coexistence activities designed to strengthen social cohesion.

Iberdrola México set the Luces de Esperanza project in motion in San Luis Potosí in November 2019 and expanded it to Oaxaca in 2020. This program is expected to benefit 12,000 people, with an investment of 80 million pesos through 2024.

Additionally, in December 2020 the company announced the expansion of its economic contribution to cover a larger share of the fees to be paid by beneficiaries for maintenance service and battery replacement, which have been brought down to 50 pesos a month – considerably lower than their candle or diesel expenses. It undertook as well to provide this support to families for 10 years – twice the time announced in 2019.

Iberdrola México is aware of the importance of creating sustainable value for society in the communities where it operates. Therefore, it drives initiatives like Luces de Esperanza, which contributes to the furtherance of several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 7 -Access to clean energy, or SDG 11 -Sustainable communities and cities.
