World wildlife day

Wildlife protection in Mexico

At Iberdrola México, we know that wildlife is essential for environmental balance, so we work for its conservation through responsible management of four basic principles: knowing, protecting, conserving, and informing. We are committed to promote and fulfill Sustainable Development Goal 15, Life of terrestrial ecosystems, to take care of critical habitats in the country.

We have developed projects that support ecosystem conservation at different locations in Mexico where our power plants and parks are located. An example is the Garrapatas estuary in Altamira, Tamaulipas, where we worked with researchers and environmental counselors on the mangrove rehabilitation, which allowed for the recovery of biodiversity in this habitat with the development of native species. Also in the region, we have a support project for feline conservation through the creation of biological corridors and the implementation of trap cameras to capture these species and restrict their flow.

Furthermore, during the construction of our Santiago and Hermosillo solar parks, we rescued and relocated 166 wildlife specimens, while at the Topolobampo II, Topolobampo III, El Carmen and Escobedo power plants, we carried out protection programs for animals. Also, in the event a specimen is found at our facilities, we have a code of action to relocate it in a safe and proper zone. Finally, an animal care and protection program was carried out in communities in the municipality of Tamazunchale before the combined cycle power plant was expanded. We succeeded in rescuing and relocating 56 individuals of 14 species, including the shrew, listed as an endangered species by the Mexican Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources.

Just like every year since 2014, the World Wildlife Day is celebrated on March 3, which we use to reaffirm our commitment to care for the environment, always hand in hand with experts so that together we will succeed in protecting Mexico’s species.
