ENERGY IN PUEBLA

PIER IV in action

Our PIER IV wind farm went into operation in the southeast of Puebla in August 2020. We placed 84 wind turbines totaling an installed capacity of 221MW for the industry.

We talked with Juan Antonio Aguilar, the project leader, who explained to us the process of energy generation from wind force and the benefits brought by development of projects like this. “First, the potential in the region to install wind turbines and better use wind power are analyzed. With regard to PIER IV wind farm, the area was examined, and it was determined that the municipalities of Cañada Morelos, Chapulco and Palmar de Bravo met the conditions to install these 80m high giants.

After the installation, power exerted by the wind on the three bladed mills causes them to move and mechanical energy to transform into electricity. The farm is operated in person by Mexican staff and some activities are performed remotely.

Mr. Aguilar also talked about social and environmental actions linked to the project, recalling that building strategic alliances with communities near its facilities is key to Iberdrola México.

During PIER’s construction, more than 900 direct Jobs and 1,360 indirect Jobs were created, and at least 14 Mexican companies were hired, generating economic revenue in the region.

In addition, community roads, education centers and sports facilities were restored, benefiting over 8 thousand people.

Regarding the environment, a program to relocate flora and fauna to a suitable and safe habitat was implemented, and 143 hectares were reforested.

The farm’s operation avoids the emission of more than 216 thousand tons of  CO into the environment every year.

At Iberdrola México, we are committed to the generation of clean energy for the benefit of the planet and its inhabitants.
